Cray XT5 Series of Supercomputers Now Available With Six-Core AMD Opteron(TM) Processors
SEATTLE, WA, Jun 01, 2009 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Global supercomputer leader Cray Inc. (NASDAQ: CRAY) today announced that the Cray XT5(TM) and Cray XT5m(TM) supercomputers are now available with the new Six-Core AMD Opteron(TM) processors, formerly code-named "Istanbul." With this latest release of AMD's next generation of processors, the Cray XT5 and Cray XT5m are the first Cray systems to feature 12 cores per computational node. This collaboration with AMD reaffirms Cray's industry-leading position in creating petascale-class systems.

"We expect the Six-Core AMD Opteron processor will dramatically improve performance and efficiency for Cray customers upgrading their current Cray XT systems, as well as provide industry-leading scalability and performance density for customers that purchase new Istanbul-based systems," said Barry Bolding, Cray's vice president of scalable systems. "We have been preparing for the arrival of AMD's new processors for some time, so that current Cray customers can easily upgrade from their existing dual- or quad-core processors and experience the benefits of dramatically increased performance, versatility and energy optimization."

The Six-Core AMD Opteron processor will provide more than a 30 percent performance per watt improvement over previous generations of AMD Opteron processors.

"This next generation of AMD processors will allow researchers and scientists to continue maximizing the computational power of their Cray supercomputers to address some of the world's most complex and sophisticated problems," said Patrick Patla, vice president and general manager, Server and Workstation Division, AMD (NYSE: AMD). "Combining the upgradeability of the Cray XT line of supercomputers with our new Six-Core AMD Opteron processors creates a perfect fit for high performance computing systems that are tasked with ever-increasingly complex computing challenges."

About the Cray XT(TM) Supercomputer Series

As the world's most scalable Linux supercomputer, the Cray XT product line combines unprecedented sustained application performance with exceptional manageability and reliability, and lower cost of ownership for customers. Using powerful AMD Opteron(TM) processors, the Cray XT line is optimized for memory-intensive and/or compute-biased workloads. The successful Cray XT product line features ECOphlex(TM) technology -- packaging and design features that promote energy savings along two dimensions: by enabling greater system density and by reducing the need for expensive air cooling and air conditioners. Additionally, the Cray Linux Environment(TM) enables optimized performance across a broader range of applications.
