SEATTLE, WA, Oct 02, 2009 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Global supercomputer leader Cray Inc. (NASDAQ: CRAY) today announced
the appointment of Michael Piraino to the position of vice president,
general counsel and corporate secretary. With 15 years of general
counsel, executive, management and legal experience, as well a
background in engineering, Piraino will be responsible for directing
Cray's legal affairs, and providing advice on legal and policy issues
to the company's management and Board of Directors.
"We are very excited to have Mike on board and leverage his wealth of
both legal and management experience as a part of our leadership
team," said Peter Ungaro, president and CEO of Cray. "He has an
impressive background, and his expertise and skill sets are a welcome
addition to the company as we work to grow and expand our leadership
position in the supercomputing market."
Prior to joining Cray, Piraino served with Fenwick & West LLP, where
he was responsible for directing the firm's clients through various
legal matters such as corporate governance, public company reporting,
mergers and acquisitions, corporate formations and structure,
financings, and intellectual property and licensing. Previously,
Piraino served as the vice president, general counsel and secretary
of WatchGuard Technologies Inc., as an executive at an emerging
technology company and as an attorney with Perkins Coie LLP. Piraino
began his career as a propulsion engineer at The Boeing Company.
"With my background in engineering and technology, I have always had
a respect and a fondness for Cray and the positive impact the
company's products have had on the research and engineering fields,"
said Piraino. "Joining the executive team at Cray is a tremendous
opportunity, and I am excited to be part of a company renowned for
its pioneering achievements in supercomputing."
Piraino will report directly to Ungaro and will assume the general
counsel and corporate secretary responsibilities of Kenneth Johnson,
who is retiring from Cray. Piraino will work with Johnson during a
transition period prior to his retirement.
"Ken has been a tremendous asset to Cray and I sincerely thank him
for all of his efforts and outstanding contributions to the company,"
said Ungaro. "Ken will be missed and, on behalf of everyone at Cray,
we wish him all the best in his retirement."
