Cray CX1000 Supercomputer Now Available With the New Intel Xeon Processor 7500 Series

SEATTLE, WA--(Marketwire - 03/30/10) - Global supercomputer leader Cray Inc. (NASDAQ:CRAY - News) today announced that the recently launched Cray CX1000 supercomputer will ship with the Intel® Xeon® processor 7500 Series (formerly codenamed "Nehalem-EX"). Built for demanding applications with advanced reliability and exceptional scalability, this new Intel Xeon processor series will be featured in the Cray CX1000-S compute configuration of the Cray CX-1000 system.

The symmetric multiprocessing (SMP)-based Cray CX1000-S configuration provides users with up to 128 cores of "big memory" computing built on Intel's QuickPath Interconnect (QPI) technology. The Cray CX1000-S system delivers maximum performance on scale-up jobs.

"Today's launch of the Intel Xeon Processor 7500 series is another step forward in giving Cray CX1000 users a best-of-class supercomputing solution architected with the latest, most advanced high performance computing technologies," said Ian Miller, senior vice president of the productivity solutions group and marketing at Cray. "The Cray CX1000 systems redefine high performance computing by delivering hybrid capabilities through a choice of configurations best suited for the specific computational needs of the user. Pairing the Cray CX1000-S with the new Intel Xeon processors provides a building block approach for scale-up computing that is second to none. Many high performance computing workloads, such as electronic design automation, require scale-up computing and these applications can now benefit from up to 1TB of memory in a single OS space."

Launched on March 23, 2010, the dense, efficient and powerful rack-mounted Cray CX1000 supercomputer is priced starting at under $100,000, and gives high performance computing (HPC) users an easy-to-use supercomputing system featuring a hybrid supercomputing architecture built on the next generation Intel Xeon processors. Each configuration allows Cray CX1000 customers to architect a hybrid supercomputing system designed to solve computationally intensive problems with scale-out, scale-up or accelerated computing solutions.

Available in one to four chassis in a single, standalone cabinet, the three compute configurations for the Cray CX1000 system include the Cray CX1000-C, Cray CX1000-G and the Cray CX1000-S. The compute-based Cray CX1000-C features the dual-socket Intel Xeon Processor 5600 series for scale-out cluster computing; the Cray CX1000-G utilizes the NVIDIA® Tesla™ GPUs for accelerator-based HPC; and the Cray CX1000-S features the Intel Xeon Processor 7500 series. These complimentary technologies can be configured together to provide one system to meet a broad range of HPC application workloads.
